A top coat is the final layer you apply to a finished Gunpla kit. It serves two purposes: protecting your work from fingerprints, dust, and handling damage, and giving the entire model a unified surface finish. Without a top coat, different plastic colors and textures create an inconsistent look. With one, the kit reads as a single cohesive object. It is the easiest finishing step and arguably the one with the biggest visual impact per minute spent.
The choice between matte, gloss, and satin determines the character of your finished build. Each finish changes how light interacts with the surface, which affects how detailed, realistic, or striking the kit appears on the shelf. This guide explains what each finish does, when to choose it, and how to apply it without ruining your work.
What a Top Coat Actually Does
Top coat is a clear, transparent layer of paint that bonds to the surface of your model. It does not add color. Instead, it changes how the surface reflects light and creates a physical barrier between the model and the environment. Decals, panel lines, and painted details all sit safely under this protective shell. Handling a top-coated kit does not leave fingerprints the way bare plastic does, and dust wipes off cleanly without scratching fine markings.
Beyond protection, top coat is the fastest way to kill the plastic sheen that makes Gunpla look toy-like. Bare styrene reflects light unevenly, creating distracting bright spots on flat surfaces. Any top coat, even a thin one, smooths out those reflections and makes the model look more like a painted object and less like a snap-together kit.
Matte Finish
Matte top coat eliminates nearly all surface gloss. Light scatters across the surface instead of bouncing off it, which creates a flat, non-reflective appearance. This is the most popular choice for military and realistic builds because it mimics the look of full-scale painted metal and composite armor. Panel lines look deeper under matte finish because the surrounding surface does not compete with reflected light.
Use matte when you want your kit to look like a real machine. It works especially well on olive, gray, dark blue, and earth-toned color schemes. Matte also hides minor surface imperfections: light sanding marks and faint brush strokes become invisible under a matte coat, making it the most forgiving finish for newer painters.
Gloss Finish
Gloss top coat creates a smooth, reflective surface that makes colors appear deeper and more saturated. Red becomes richer, metallics look polished, and candy paint jobs get the wet, lacquered look they are designed for. Gloss is the right choice when you want vibrant, eye-catching display pieces or when the design itself calls for a clean, factory-fresh aesthetic.
Gloss is also essential as an intermediate coat before applying waterslide decals or panel washes. Decals conform better to smooth surfaces, and enamel washes flow into panel lines more predictably on a glossy base. Even if you plan a matte final coat, consider spraying a gloss layer first, applying your decals and wash, and then sealing everything under matte.
Satin (Semi Gloss) Finish
Satin sits between matte and gloss, offering a subtle sheen without full reflectivity. It is the closest match to real-world painted surfaces: military vehicles, aircraft fuselages, and automotive panels all tend to sit in the satin range. If you cannot decide between matte and gloss, satin is the safe default. It looks natural in most lighting conditions and photographs well under both direct and ambient light.
Satin is particularly good on kits where you want some visual pop without the toy-like shine of gloss. Modern Gundam designs with sleek, angular armor panels benefit from the subtle reflectivity that satin provides. It keeps detail visible without flattening the surface the way a heavy matte coat can.
Spray Can vs Airbrush Application
Most builders apply top coat from a spray can. Mr. Hobby Top Coat (the flat variant in the blue can) is the standard recommendation for matte finishes. Tamiya TS-series and Mr. Super Clear are also reliable options. Spray cans are convenient, consistent, and require no cleanup. Their main limitation is that you cannot control the spray as precisely as an airbrush.
An airbrush gives you finer control over coat thickness and can lay down more even coverage on complex shapes. If you already own an airbrush setup, decanting top coat from a can into your cup (or mixing a dedicated clear from a bottle) gives you the best of both worlds. For most builders, though, spray cans are perfectly sufficient and much faster.
How to Apply a Top Coat
Shake the can for a full 60 seconds. Start spraying off the model and sweep across it in a smooth pass, releasing the nozzle past the far edge. Work from about 20 centimeters away and build up coverage in three to four light passes. Heavy coats pool, run, and cloud. Let each pass dry for two to three minutes before applying the next.
Rotate the model between passes to hit all angles evenly. Inner frame details and recessed areas need direct passes to receive coverage. If you are top-coating a fully assembled kit rather than individual parts, use a turntable or hold the model by its waist joint to minimize missed spots.
When to Apply Your Top Coat
Top coat goes on last, after panel lining, decals, and any paint or weathering work. Applying it too early locks in an unfinished surface. The standard workflow is: build, panel line, apply decals, clean up, then top coat. If you are using an enamel panel wash, spray a gloss coat first to protect the plastic, apply the wash, clean the excess, then seal everything with your final matte or satin coat.
One exception: if you are applying waterslide decals to bare plastic, spray a light gloss coat first. Decals need a smooth surface to conform properly. After the decals are set and dry, spray your final coat over everything. This technique, called the gloss-decal-matte sandwich, gives you the best decal adhesion with the finish you actually want.
Common Top Coat Mistakes
Spraying Too Close or Too Heavy
This causes a milky white haze on matte finishes and visible runs on gloss coats. If you see whitening or pooling, you are too close or moving too slowly. Distance and speed are your two controls: stay far enough back and keep moving.
Spraying in Humidity
Humidity above 60 percent traps moisture between layers, causing a permanent cloudy appearance called blushing. Spray on dry days, or use an indoor spray booth with ventilation. If blushing occurs, a very light mist of the same top coat on a dry day can sometimes dissolve and re-level the affected area.
Missing Hidden Surfaces
The back of shields, undersides of skirts, and inner joint areas are easy to miss. These uncoated patches catch the eye because the finish changes abruptly from matte to glossy plastic. Work around the model systematically and check all angles before you set it aside to cure.
