Painting a Gunpla kit is the biggest leap you can take as a builder. Out of the box, Bandai's color separation already gives you a clean-looking model, but paint lets you choose your own color scheme, fix mismatched plastic tones, and add the kind of shading and weathering that turns a kit from a toy into a scale model. If you have been building snap-fit kits and want the next challenge, painting is where the hobby gets personal.
The good news is that painting Gunpla does not require expensive equipment or years of practice. Plenty of builders produce stunning results with nothing more than a few rattle cans and patience. This guide walks you through every method, from spray cans to airbrush, and covers all the preparation and finishing steps so your first painted kit looks like you have been doing this for years.
Why Paint Your Gunpla
There are three reasons builders paint. First, custom colors. You might want your RX-78-2 in desert camouflage or your Zaku in metallic black. Paint makes that possible. Second, color correction. Some kits use a single shade of white across parts that should be off-white, cream, or light gray in the anime. Paint fixes that subtle wrongness. Third, weathering and realism. Dry brushing silver on edges, adding oil stains near joints, and fading panel colors all create the illusion of a machine that has seen battle rather than a plastic figure that came out of a box.
You do not have to paint everything. Many builders paint only specific parts, such as thrusters, weapons, or inner frame details, while leaving the main armor in its molded color. This selective approach saves time and still elevates the kit dramatically.
Choosing Your Painting Method
Spray Cans
Rattlecans are the fastest entry point. Tamiya, Mr. Hobby, and Rust-Oleum all sell spray paint suitable for plastic models. The technique is simple: hold the can 15 to 20 centimeters from the part, move in smooth passes, and build up color in thin coats rather than one thick layer. Spray cans excel at even base coats and primers but lack precision for detail work. Use them for large armor panels, shields, and weapons.
Hand Brushing
A set of small synthetic brushes and a jar of acrylic model paint is the cheapest painting setup. Hand brushing is ideal for small details: camera eyes, thrusters, pipe work, inner frame accents. The learning curve is managing brush strokes so they do not leave visible marks. Thin your paint until it flows smoothly, apply multiple light coats, and let each coat dry completely. Vallejo, Citadel, and Tamiya acrylics all work well on styrene plastic.
Airbrush
An airbrush gives you the most control. You can spray gradients, pre-shade panel lines, and lay down perfectly smooth coats that no brush or rattle can match. The trade-off is cost: a basic dual-action airbrush with a compressor runs $80 to $150. If you plan to paint more than a few kits, the investment pays for itself in paint savings and finish quality. Start with a 0.3mm needle, which handles both broad coverage and fine detail.
Surface Preparation
Paint sticks to clean, slightly rough surfaces. Before painting, wash all parts in warm water with dish soap to remove mold release agent, the oily residue left from manufacturing. Let the parts dry completely. If you sanded any nub marks, those areas are already roughened and will accept paint well. For glossy surfaces, a light pass with 800-grit sandpaper gives the paint something to grip. Never skip this step: paint applied over mold release will peel off within weeks.
Priming Your Kit
Primer is the foundation coat that ensures your color goes on evenly and sticks permanently. Use a dedicated model primer like Mr. Surfacer, Tamiya Surface Primer, or Vallejo Primer. Gray primer is the most versatile: it does not tint your final color the way white or black would, and it reveals surface imperfections you might have missed during sanding.
Apply primer in thin, even coats. Let each coat dry for 15 to 30 minutes before adding the next. Two to three light coats beat one heavy coat every time. A heavy coat fills panel lines and obscures detail, which defeats the purpose of building a detailed kit. Once the primer is fully cured, you have a uniform surface ready for color.
Hand Brushing Technique
Load your brush with thinned paint, then wipe the excess on the rim of the jar so the brush is damp, not dripping. Lay the paint in one direction with smooth, even strokes. Do not go back and forth over wet paint. Let the first coat dry fully, then apply a second coat perpendicular to the first. This cross-hatching technique minimizes visible brush marks. Three thin coats usually give full, even coverage.
For metallics and detail work, use a fine pointed brush and dot the paint where you need it rather than stroking. Metallic paints show brush marks more than flat colors, so keep the application thin and precise.
Spray Can Technique
Shake the can vigorously for a full minute. Start spraying off the part and sweep across it, releasing the nozzle after you pass the edge. This prevents pooling at the start and end of each pass. Keep the distance consistent and move at a steady pace. Multiple light passes build a smooth coat without drips. In cold or humid conditions, warm the can in lukewarm water for a few minutes first: cold paint sputters and humid air traps moisture under the paint film.
Airbrush Basics
Thin your paint to a milk-like consistency using the appropriate thinner for the paint line. Tamiya acrylics use Tamiya X-20A thinner; lacquers use Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. Start with low air pressure, around 15 to 20 PSI, and increase if the paint spatters. Hold the airbrush 10 to 15 centimeters from the part and spray in controlled passes. For base coats, open the needle wide and sweep across the part. For pre-shading or fine detail, close the needle and work closer to the surface.
Clean the airbrush between colors by running thinner through it until the spray runs clear. Neglecting cleanup clogs the needle and ruins the next paint session. A few minutes of cleaning saves hours of troubleshooting later.
Clear Coating and Protection
After all your painting and panel lining is done, seal the kit with a clear top coat. Matte finishes hide minor imperfections and give a realistic, military look. Gloss finishes make colors pop and work well on candy or metallic paint jobs. Satin sits between the two and is the safest choice if you are unsure. Apply top coat the same way as primer: thin, even coats with full drying between layers.
Common Painting Mistakes
Going Too Thick
The single most common mistake. Thick paint obscures detail, drips, and takes forever to dry. If you can see panel lines disappearing under your coat, you are applying too much. Thin the paint more and add another coat instead.
Skipping Primer
Paint applied directly to bare plastic will chip and peel, especially on joints and moving parts. Primer takes ten minutes and saves your entire paint job from premature failure.
Painting in Humid Conditions
Humidity above 60 percent causes a milky haze called blushing on lacquer and enamel paints. If you see white fog forming on your clear coat, the air is too humid. Paint on dry days or use a retarder additive to slow the drying time.
Not Testing Colors First
Always spray a test sprue before committing to a full panel. Colors look different on plastic than they do on the cap of the can. A test shot takes seconds and prevents an entire repaint.
Getting Started
Pick a cheap HG kit you do not mind experimenting on. Sand and prime it, then paint just the armor panels in a single color.
